Navy Secretary Modley Resigns After Calling Ousted Commander ‘Stupid’

Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modley submitted his resignation letter Tuesday amid a fierce backlash after leaked audio showed him calling the recently ousted commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt “stupid” in an address to the ship’s crew, according to CNN

Modley attacked Captain Brett Crozier after he was fired for blowing the whistle on the spread of COVID–19 on his aircraft carrier. Crozier then contracted the virus himself.

Crozier’s ouster set off a political firestorm, with many hailing the captain as a hero for sounding the alarm.

In the leaked audio, a distraught member of the ship’s crew can be heard shouting, “What the [expletive]!” during Modley’s speech.

Yesterday, angered Twitter users caused the hashtag #ResignModley to trend worldwide. In an about face, the Secretary issued an apology for his statements on Monday night.

Good riddance!
