It was only a matter of time before President Trump took aim at infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.
While the two have indirectly contradicted one another while providing advice amid the coronavirus pandemic, the president took his first direct shot at the doctor on Sunday, retweeting a tweet containing the hashtag #FireFauci.
As previously reported by Meidas Touch, Dr. Fauci has become a scapegoat for the right’s anger, with many accusing him of being a member of the ‘Deep State’ hell-bent on destroying Trump’s chances for reelection. The right’s resentment towards the expert necessitated the federal government to provide Dr. Fauci with extra security detail.
Now, our rudderless president is seeking to blame anyone he can for his months of missteps and denials. It’s not his fault this COVID-19 got out of control in the U.S. – it’s Dr. Fauci’s, of course! It couldn’t possibly be Trump’s fault that a delayed federal response resulted in a near-total economic shutdown! Nope! Must be Fauci!
While we can’t predict if or when Trump will fire the doctor, it seems that the writing is on the wall.
The Daily Beast reports that Trump spent his Easter Sunday as all Americans do, complaining to aides that he made Fauci a “star” and that barely anyone would know who the doctor was if not for him. As history shows, if there’s anything Trump hates, it’s his celebrity being overshadowed.
Dr. Fauci, like any human, is not infallible. But he has worked for six presidents on both sides of the aisle. He is a foremost expert in his field. He is the last voice of reason and science in the administration.
And these are exactly the reasons why Trump may actually go ahead and #FireFauci.
Good luck, America.
